7 Entrepreneurial Lessons I Learnt from Life Of Pi


Yann Martel’s Booker Prize winning book, Life of Pi has been transformed beautifully into celluloid by Ang Lee of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Brokeback Mountain fame. It’s a story of the protagonist Pi’s magical journey on a lifeboat with Richard Parker, a Royal Bengal Tiger for company and in the process discovering himself, faith and God. A captivating story with many dimensions and visually stunning, the movie leaves you engrossed till the end and has also got high ratings from both the critics and audience. There are also some great lessons in life and business, that one can learn from Life Of Pi.
1. If you believe in everything, you will end up not believing in anything at all
Pi’s father Santosh Patel told this to Pi at the dining table, when he was getting inquisitive about different religions and wanted to follow all of them at the same time. His words hold true, not only for religion, but are also valid for our daily life and business. It’s difficult to follow different paths at the same time, as many of them are conflicting in nature and often create confusion and make it difficult to stay focused and at times, lead to wastage of crucial resources. As an entrepreneur, it’s also important to choose your mentors, guides wisely. Listening to all sorts of advice will harm your chances and cause delay in reaching your end goal. As with faith and advisors in life, entrepreneurs must be careful in choosing their business model and target group. In early days, when an entrepreneur is trying to establish his business, it’s important to prioritize and decide on whether you’re targeting SME’s or Large Enterprises or you’re operating in B2B or B2C segment for the matter. Pursuing divergent and often energy sapping paths lead to quick burnouts and eventual disillusionment with the whole process.
2. Branding is important
Pi Patel was born with the name Piscina Molitor Patel, given by his Uncle after a swimming pool in France. This name obviously caused him lot of anguish as everyone started making fun of his name at school and outside. Pi had to work hard on a rebranding exercise. He realized early, that his name can cause him more pain, going ahead in life. At first, he tried to work on individuals, and later started addressing groups about his name being derived from the Greek letter Pi which is ratio of a circle’s circumference by diameter. But, it didn’t work well for him. So, he decided to remember the value of Pi expressed in several hundred decimal places to drive home the point. Associating a story with the name made it work even better for him. So, if you have to work on creating a new brand name of changing your existing brand name for that matter, work on telling a good story which captures the imagination of the audience. The story makes the brand name stick. And, as Pi Patel learnt it the hard way, rebranding can be a difficult and often expensive exercise. So, if you inherit an unimaginative or not so great brand name, starting rebranding exercise early as Pi did really helps. Come to think of it, if the book or movie title was ‘Life Of Piscine Molitor’, it may not have worked that well. Choosing a good brand name could be your first step towards creating a successful brand.
3. Having a plan is essential, not optional
When Pi was thrown into the Sea on the lifeboat with limited stock of resources after his ship capsized, he had to make a plan to survive the uncertain and indeterminate period in the harsh seas. Fortunately, he found a handbook to help him plan for the time on the lifeboat. If you’re an entrepreneur, think of the handbook as your business plan. It’s important to keep it handy and work according to the plan and of course, keep referring to it, when you’re in doubt and monitor progress as you go along. Probably, the most important resource for an entrepreneur is money and in the beginning, when income is low and uncertain, an entrepreneur needs to make sure, the money (resources) lasts till revenues kick in or next round of funding (help) comes in the choppy waters of entrepreneurial journey. In life also, continuous planning for different stages of your life, and not only during the difficult days, when resources are low, will help you live a good life.
4. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket
When Pi found Richard Parker on the life boat, he got scared and threw all the supplies in the lifeboat to a makeshift raft and tied it to the life boat and decided to shift to the raft. At that moment, it looked like the wise thing to do, without taking into consideration greater dangers, still unknown to him. When the breaching whale appeared at night and upturned Pi’s raft throwing all his supplies to the water, Pi realized, living with Mr. Parker on the boat may be a better option. While starting up, resources are typically scarce and it’s important to guard them and stop leakages or losses. It’s good to have one secure base and address the market. Entering unknown and uncharted territories without adequate research and throwing resources at the market and not protecting your own backyard could be a deadly mistake, few startups can afford. Also, if you have limited resources and there are multiple products, fighting for the same resource, it’s better to spread your resources across groups to reduce dependency on 1 product to succeed, which is a low probability in a highly uncertain startup environment. In life, whether you’re investing for a secure and a better future, it’s good to spread your resources across various available options. For career improvements, consider skill enhancement and be aware of the job market realities and don’t just tie yourself to your current Company, to stay relevant in the long run.
5. Learn to co-exist
After the whale incident, Pi had to reconcile to the fact that he has to live with Mr. Parker on the lifeboat, an idea, which he had been resisting so far. As a first step, he decided to start communicating with Mr. Parker and also set out marking their territories and setting some rules. Having Mr. Parker on board also kept him alert at all times. When Mr. Parker jumped in the waters of Pacific Ocean, looking for fish, Pi helped him to get on board and slowly, he started developing a bond with him. Mr. Parker is both a co-founder and a competitor for Pi in his entrepreneurial journey. An entrepreneur needs to co-exist with both. With co-founders, it’s important to communicate clearly, define roles and responsibilities and ensure that you don’t encroach upon each other’s spaces. An entrepreneur needs to learn to co-exist with competition in the market. Competition keeps him alert and on his toes. And it’s important to keep the competition healthy and not indulge in unethical, dirty tactics in the market. This may even mean, occasionally helping a competitor, while fiercely protecting your market share, if it helps the overall market grow.
6. Keep moving
When Pi reached the mysterious floating island of carnivorous algae inhabited by meerkats, it seemed like, he has reached an oasis of life with bountiful food, water and shelter. But, it probably symbolizes the idea of settling for something average when there could be something much better in store. But, covering the last mile is often the most difficult part of the journey when body and mind wants to give up. Also, it could potentially be a dangerous compromise fraught with dangers, just like living in the island which turns carnivorous at night. In life and business, it’s important to keep moving and not get complacent with interim success, related to reaching some milestones. It’s important to keep an eye on the final destination. Pi kept looking for signs like observing the meerkats running for high ground or finding the tooth inside the flower. An entrepreneur also, has to keep his ears close to the ground and constantly keep evolving and updating his product by launching new versions or even launching new products to address new gaps in the market. Sometimes, it may also mean, changing the business model or exiting the market, if the market dynamics necessitate such an action.
7. Don’t give up
Life Of Pi is a story of perseverance and a story of not giving up, even in the harshest of conditions. Pi didn’t give up hope and he kept moving. Whether it’s the black sea or the dark clouds or the ominous waves or the hungry predator as company, Pi never gave up hope of survival. Similarly, for an entrepreneur, it’s important to remember, that the darkest days are not going to last. It’s important, not to give up on your dreams and give up on life. So, the days, when you are down and in state of despair and almost on the verge of giving up, you must remember, that this stage like everything else in life is only temporary and this too shall pass. There are times, when it may seem like you have tried everything possible within your means and there is only a little more that you can do. In those hours, it’s important to remember, that there is someone watching out for you and you’re not here without a reason. There will be always some opportunities like the flying fish for food or rains for drinking water or the floating island for a bit of rest and respite, which will sustain you, till you reach the shores of success, provided you don’t give up.

Day ___ : Dilli and CP

I am back...

Today it was some kinda lazy day..

The eye opened when frnd text came about leaving from Delhi for vacation :)

I was still in bed with one eye opened ;)

Usse phone kia to no reply :(

Fir jaise taise taiyar hua usse See Off karne tab tak koi reply nahi, fir laga shayad mazak hai :D

Firse so gaya ...  grrr...

Utha time 9:30 aaj to bhaiya late ho gaye office ke liye..

Mamm ko msg kia, I will reach bit late today...

She replied: I know :)

I went to Kitchen for the Tea aur pata chala, aaj to Cylinder khatam ho gaya :(

Fir aise hi Company gaya... Bhag daud ke..

Did most of work aur 6:30 baje firse frnd ka text...

"Lost Train"

I replied: "Stop Kidding"

No reply came..

Fir call aaya, "Whr r u?"

I said in office, aur plan banaya chalo CP milte hai..

Bhaga dauda Metro Station pohocha aur Metro pakdi...

Pohocha CP 7pm fir thoda kaam nipta ke..

Dunkin mein gaye, Donuts khaye aur fir uske ghar...

Roomiee ne badiya Garam chai banai, It was fantastic... Pure din ki thakan mit gai..

Fir nikla room se aur Metro pakdi Sector 15 ke liye...

It was around 11:30 jab room pohocha..

Aur fir wohi room mein pohochke email ke reply aur thoda skype...

Ab off to bed... Kal time pe jaana haii... :)

Day __ : Dillii and Atta market, Noida, Sector 27


23/06

Kitne dino se soch raha hu, chalo firse blog likhte hai par time nahi milta (Its weird L Shayad mein Dillii aake aalasi ho gaya hu J )

So finally ab se mein firse likhne ka shuru karta hu…

Aaj ka din “bada sona tha ji, bohot hi change tha” (Punjabi is most touchy language of Dillii )

Today slept after watching movie Adam and Eve (Its different then Blue Lagoon).. 

I rate it 3.5 / 5 star. Good movie, must watch once for all the people who believe in true love (u wont find any thing similar to bollywood, so please don’t expect it :D

Slept around at 1.30 am

Got up with the phone call of friend at 10.30 am. Fir thoda bohot Nashta kia, aaj the “Kanda Poha” (Maharashtrian typical breakfast).

Then again slept at 1.30 pm (Corporate makes you realize the importance of weekend :D)

Fir 5.30 baje utha, fir vadiya nahake frnd ko msg kia, “Wats the plan today? “

Frnd : “No plan sorry”

Me: “Ok” (My complete mood was shattered in pieces, I was expecting ki aaj 
kahin ghumne jaayenge, par aaj to vaat lag gai).

Ab kya kare, force bhi nahi kar sakte, kisiko jabrdasti ghumne ke liye.

Fir socha chalo mails chk karte hai. Jaisehi bag kholi tab surrrr zarrrr Chain kharab (Oh shit! Dhat teri ki)

Ab to bag lana padega, chalo jaldi se nahi to market band ho jaegi.

Room mates ko pucha to wo bole GIP Mall mein chale jaa, bag mil jayegi.

Chalo ab akele hi GIP jaane padega.

Left at 6.30 reached at 7pm at Sector 18 Metro Stn.

Jaise utra bahar, dekha to ek aadmi bag bech raha tha. Maine aiwai puch lia, 
“Bhaiya kitne ki hai ?”

Bag wala: “750”

Me: “Dene ka bhav batao?” (This is quality of we Indian, lena nahi bhi ho to bhi 
bargain to pura kar hi lenge :D)

Bag wala:  “Aap pasand to karie, rate ho jayega”

I saw some bags, ek achi lagi.

Me:”Ye bag kitne main?”

Bag wala: “Sir ye bhi 750 ki hai”

Me:”Mere budget sirf 300 hai”

Bag wala: “Nahi ho payegi”

Me: “Thik hai”, and started walking

Bag wala: “Bhaiya suniye, 500 final”

Me: “300”

Bag wala:”Kharidi hai bhaiya 480 rupay ki”

Me: “Fir rehne do”

Bag wala:”Chalo bhaiya 450 de do”

Me:”Aapka 30 ka ghata kyu kar rahe ho?, Rehne do”

Bag wala: “Aap le lijiye, dusre se kama lenge”

Me: 350

Bag wala: nahi 450 final

Me:400 final, no bargain,dena  ho to do, nahi to mein jaa raha hu.

I gave him 400rs. Aur fir aisa laga yaar mujhe to Mall jaane tha isse lene, ab to kharidli, chalo rehne do mall, aaj ATTA market, Sector 27 ghum lete hai :D

Saw the market completely, drank Minute Maid, Orange flavor, it is really good drink.

Fir Hair cutting kar wai, fir aur market ghuma.

Then back to my Metro station at 10.50pm, auto mili share wali, aaj wo full ho gai thi, to badiya back side pe Khada aaya, it was so amazing feeling, jo shayad roof top opening car mein hi milti hai, I was standing and the cold breeze was touching my face, it was awesome :D

Fir room pohocha to bhuk gayab ho gai thi.

Fir socha chalo aaj “ Vicky Donor” Movie dekhta hu (Delhities recommended me this movie many times)

Its good movie, must watch to see the Delhi and its culture.

Good shooting of CP, Lajpat Nagar, and many places of Delhi.

Now finally decided to write blog, so ab bhagwan kare mein roz is tara blog likhta rahu, aur aap logo ka Manoranjan karta rahu :D

Day 6: Dillii and Gurgaon

09/06/12:

Hey…

It was great and long sleep today :)

Was totally drained and Neend to aisi vadiya aur changi aa gai :)

Got up at 2pm checked text, Slept again…

Got up at 5pm checked text it was from Apps Dii to meet at GIP in evening and other from M Dii asking to visit her place tonight as Uncle was also here and she was leaving to home.

Called M Dii, told her that its long to come at her place and she said you have to come here tonight as we are leaving tomorrow at noon. Badi behen ke samne to kiske chalti hai?

Aaata hun meri maa Gurgaon :)

Called Apps Dii said I am leaving for Gurgaon and fixed plan to meet her at Gurgaon at M Dii’s home.

Ab taiyari shuru ki jaane ki…

Today I was not at all willing to try the street food as its tough to digest aur rox ek cheez khau to enjoy nahi kar sakte.

Got the Auto reached Metro.

Had Snack at Café Buddy’s Metro oulet, had Veg Puff and Tropicana :)
Veg Puff was good but yaar Tropicana was not upto the Mark, anyways shayad outlet ke Temperature fluctuation ke kaaran taste change hua hoga.

Catched Metro…

Noida Sector 15 to Rajeev Chowk (Blue Line)
Rajeev Chowk to MG Road (Yellow line)

It takes almost 2hours to reach :p But, Nice journey, you can take the nap.
Reached at 8pm. Called her.

Me: Where are you?

M Dii: Reaching get down at MDF Mall.

Me: Ok

I asked for the direction of Mall, he showed me the way, I followed it was City Mall :)

I roamed around fir laga yaar shayad galat jaga aa gaya hu, firse pucha then came to know that MDF is just in front of City Mall.

Crossed the Road via Metro Bridge and reached MDF Mall :)

FASTRACK 50% OFF … Hurry Up… Just for Today…

I was so damn happy went in and checked the watched came to know that its only for women :p

Achaa hua koi ladki nahi thi mere saath nahi to aaj pakka card swipe ho hi jaata, Relaxed :D

Bahar aaya itne mein Dii, Jiju aur Mausaji pohoch gaye.

Hugs.. Hugs… Hugs…

Went in the Mall shared my experience with them and they complimented me for the Blog :)

Shopped items and now was Hungry.

Me: Jiju ab bhukh lagi hai

R Jiju: Chalo kahan khoge?

Me: Kuch yaar Indian khana hai, Chat types..

R Jiju: Chaliye fir aaj Haldiram’s chalte hai…

Me: Badiya

Went to Sahara Mall, went to Haldiram’s.

It was good place, crowded by people, I was shocked to see the love of people for the Indian Snacks.

Had Cholle Bhature, Dosa, Idli and most tasty Chaat :)

Good food, Hygienic and taste was superb :) They even had Water which was purified and drinkable which was not attracting any extra charges.

Had Gola (In delhi its called Chuski) :)

Went to home and then yahan wahan ki baaten, humari India aur Indian Culture J

Aur Android pe Games aur app downloading naye naye cheezo ki khoj J

Uske baad Ice Creams khai :D

Bohot pet bhar gaya yaar aaj J

Chalo ab sone jaa raha hun, kal firse Dii ko see off karne jaana hai aur Appu Dii se milna hai J

Day 5: Dillli and Night Office

08/06/12:

Night shift, enjoyment, working till 8am


I am back…

It was superb Day (Sorry, I mean the Night, bcoz all the day, I was sleeping :p) 
The Night Shift :D

First time in life had a Night Shift for working, Many time I have waken entire Night till the Sun rises while reading novels, , Skype with Friends :D , working on Engineering projects (which start in Microsoft Office and ends at Facebook :)

This was entirely great experience…


Subhe Utha time tha 9am idhar udhar dekha aur fir SMS mamm ka, See you at 7:15pm at GIP Mall

Yaar, I am lost, I thought and wiped my eyes... I thought aaj to office late ho gaya... Firse Text padha... Oye its 7:15pm and I am not late main Jaldi uth gaya hu...

Firse Back to Sleep and Dreams ... :D

Woke up time is 11am, firse so gaya, wake up time is 2pm, firse so gaya...

Knock Knock, Knock, Knock... Yaar kaun hai????

Time is 3:45pm and it was roommiee...

Roomiee (R): Kya hua aaj tabiyat theek nahi hai? Office nahi gaya? Tujhe nikal dia kya? Kuch tension hai? Kya hua? Kuch to bol? (I was shocked about his speed of asking questions, not waiting for the answer at all, just goin on and on... :p)

Me: Night Shift hai, Ab sone de mujhe 7 nikalna hai

R: Arey uth jaa yaar, jaldi se :)


It was almost 6pm when I was ready to leave after listening my roomie’s long story of 3hours :D

As I came down it was Traffic Jam (Delhi suffers from Traffic Jam a lot not like Mumbai, here people drive as they are the Towing Company owners, Kahan pe bhi gadi daal do, aur fir aage piche walo ko chilate hai, bhaiya gaadi nahi aati kya theek se chalana :p )

Ab kya, Chalo yahin kuch kha lete hai J

Went to Market which is near by to Room its crowded by Unbranded but good and tasty food :)

Roamed around market but No one was selling Vada Pav (LifeLine of Mumabaikaar’s), par kuch to khana padega na, So I was searching some Finger Food (It is type of food which can be eaten even while walking and does not requires and is mobile to carry).

Utne mein ek Momos wala Dikha J

Had Momos but they were just vain not at all worth, So I had no option then searching something which is good and saves my time as I have to reach Metro Station asap.

Thank God, Ek Kaati wala mil gaya, Badiya Kaati bech raha tha J

Me: Bhaiya Kaati milegi?

Bhaiya: Kaati ki dukaan hai Kaati to miledgi na….

Me: Mujhe laga Vadapav Milega… J

Bhaiya totally confused, confused and Finally asked: Kya loge?

Me: Veg. Kaati dena

He made really nice Kaati roll and Handed me, It was good and more important it was Finger food J

Had Kaati Roll and took juice (Appetizer is always needed with such High Wheat product)

Utne mein Traffic Jam thoda sa khul gaya aur Shared Auto mil hi gai J

Catched Auto enjoyed Kaati and Drink while going reached Metro station took Metro :D Its Fun always :)

Reached station it was 7:05pm. Thank God I am on time :)

Rushed towards the GIP Mall as Mamm was going to meet me there at 7:15pm

Reached GIP Mall it was 7:10pm only, Relieved J

Called Mamm… Tring Tring

Me: I reached where are you?

Mamm: Good Great stay there I will be in some mins as the Taxi comes I will 
leave. I am ready too. I will call as I reach.

Me: Ok

I searched I place in front of GIP near the Walking Flyover it was good, many were sitting there and were waiting like I was.

Had Shikanji (It’s the Drink which is highly drunk by people for chilling themselves in Hot Summers), It taste good too J

Mamm was there in some Mins and we started for office, Had discussion about the Store visit and we discussed about my project.

She is damn good woman, I am thankful to almighty for such a good guide (Maska nahi laga raha hun, Sachi baat hai, Even U will have same opinion when u will meet her).

Reached Office it was almost 8pm.

Went to Plant and did some exercise, it was great to see all the fresh products and Aroma which waters your mouth :)

It was 10:45pm and We were Hungry :)

Wat to do now? Simple Dominos Pizza :))))))

Pizza, Garlic bread, Coke and Fudge :) Super Awesome enjoyed food and back to work :)

Came for Coffee Break at 3am, She is such kind person, She even made a Coffee for me from the Microwave :) Had detailed talk and shared many new things during coffee break :) (I have observed from my College days that the Coffee and Tea at Night taste many times better then the day time, Its great to enjoy Hot coffee at Night).

Back to work everything was over by 7am and by eye lids started kissing each other now :p

Left the Office when it was 8am, Had Great experience for Die Hard Production plant and was so much happy to learn them all, Its Great Experience :)

Reached Home by 9 am,

R:  Pohe ache hai kha le baad me sona.

Me: Ok, chal tere plate mein se kha leta hun, leke aa please :)

Day 4: Dillliii and Store

07/06/12:

Awesome day...

Woke up at 8.15am still the body was aching badly called mamm, She said its fine if I take leave today... But, I thought it will be fine I concentrate on work rather then it...

Woke at 9.15am with some more energy and enthusiasm...

Did all the work, Brush also yaar :)

Did the search on Google to find the route of Greater kailash as our Dunkin' Donuts outlet is there.

Understood that, I have to change the train at Rajeev Chowk then board train of HUDA i,e, of Gurgaon which I have to leave at Central Secretariat and board the train for Badarpur and leave it at Kailash Colony for Greater kailash.

Please note that: Nearest Metro Station to Greater kailash is Kailash Colony

Called Mamm and said her I will leave at 11am and mostly reach outlet till 12 Noon at Store.
She said that Not to go and take rest, but I said that Its fine I can go...

Finally went to Metro station and Boarded train...

I have to go in 3 metro's

  1. Noida Sector 15 to Rajeev Chowk
  2. Rajeev Chowk to Central Secretariat
  3. Central Secretariat to Kailash Colony
Thanks to Metro Card as you have to punch it only at the station where you leave :)

It was fun travelling in Metro :)

Reached Kailash Colony got the Cycle Rickshaw first time in my life :)

It was great journey in Cycle rickshaw too (This are available only in North India)

Reached M Block in the Market, It was so god damn crowded by branded shops that even many Malls will feel shy in front of it :)

I mean its Market with most of the Branded Stores :)

Reached the Dunkin Donuts store at Greater kailash 1, M block and felt relaxed... Checked time, it was just 11:55 am ( I saved 5 mins, :P Probably taking Richshaw helped me to save time)

Went in the Outlet Met many fantastic people there :)

All the Team was well motivated and dedicated, Greatest the Store Manager was fantastic person :)

Had fun working in Outlet, where you can get the Instant Feedback of the Consumer :)

I had Crossiant Garden Veg, it was fantastic in taste, I bet this product is better than McD,Subway's similar product. Greatest of all, got the Employee Discount of 25% in store... :D

Left store again in Cycle Rickshaw got the Metro changed multiple station and back to room :)

Feeling Energetic after writing the Blog, I mean Daily Dillii Dialy (DDD)... :)

Day 3: Dilli and Rains

06/06/12:


I am back…

It was superb day…

Woke up at 5:45am texted mamm and she replied c u at 6:45 at place.

Started doing necessary things, even did the Brush J

Kitchen mein Chai banana ka samaan dhundha par kuch bhi nahi tha available. 
Finally bina Chai ke chal diye.

Started for Metro at 6:30 am, Reached at 6:45 on station… OMG…

Got the train, texted mamm, will be there in few mins…

 Reached station called her she said lets meet infront of mall, I hurried (thought she must be waiting).

Reached there and Relaxed she was goin to come in Mins...

Sat in front of Mall, with heavy bag (Laptop bohot bhari lagta hai, jab aap subhe subhe aadhi neend mein khani pe jaate ho). Even the Eye Lids were very heavy, Neend lagne hi wali thi ki itne me... PeeP PeeP...

Sat in car had some bourbon and reached office...

Wahan pe sab pehle hi pohoch gaye the :(

Went to Kitchen and worked with Chef and the entire crew for better systems :)

Enjoyeddddd a lot :))

Went to office at 10:30am and Had Great Cofffee :) (Company's Coffee is awesome).

Started working again, pata hi nahi chala 1:40pm ho gaya time... Fatafat Kitchen mein gaya to pata chala Khana khatam :( 

Aaya office mein, Ab kya?

Went to Pantry aur usse bola yaar Double Maggi bana de :) (This is my new creation, I mean to make 2maggi and consume at a time :)

Mujhe to bohot bhukh lagi thi aur mamm ko sirf thodi si ...

Had Maggi and Hot Tea (New Combination :)

Back to Work left at 5:50 pm by bus today :) Kyoki roz roz Mamm2 ki madad lena theek nahi hai na yaar, though she is very good and asked me to wait for her, but I thought why to bother, probably I was wrong...

Catched Bus aur pata nahi kab neend lag gai... Jab khuli tab pata chala apna stop to bohot peeche reh gaya hai :( Ab kya Driver saab ko bola Please koi bhi Metro station ke pass ruka dijiye...

Accidently, the bus left me at the same place jahan se subhe office gaya tha... So technically the Displacement is ZERO (I speak like Science geek student).

Itne me Baarish ki halki bunde aane lagi aur samne thi ek Sweet Corn ki gadi :) (The street shop)

Corn liya aur fir Baarish ka pura anand uthaya :)



Baad mein Metro pakdi aur back to Room J

Day 2: Dilliii and Office :)))

05/06/12:

I am back with my Dilllliiii diaries :)

It was fun todayyyy :D

Got up in early in the morning, rushed for all the necessary things :p

Uske baad company ke bando ko call kia aur bola mein bhi aaj Bus catch karunga aapke saath to mere liye seat rakhna :)

Fir realized ki aaj brush nahi kia, arey dhat teri ki ab...??? Yaad aaya Plax kab kaam aayega.... Nikala fatafat rinse kia aur bhaga office...

Thanks to inventor of Liquid Mouth washer :)

Bhaga bhaga aur shared auto pakdi, again today Autowala was good man usne mujhe sahi raste pe drop kia aur bola wahase aapka bus milega...

Fir dekha to phone silent pe 7 missed calls... Ab to pura laga hi ta bus chali gai hogi :)

Call kia to number busy, speed kam ho gai... Firse call kia, phone uthaya...

Bhaiya: (Was speaking something, but, I was not concentrating, spitted out...
Me: Bus kahan hai? Main yaha khada hu...
Bhaiya: Arey bus ke baha me aapka wait kar raha hu, aap nahi dikh rahe...
Me:Landmark batao
Bhaiya: Arey dikhe aap, lane cross karke aao
Me: Kaise?
Bhaiya: Metro ka bridge use karke cross karo...

OMG... Itna lamba bridge aur crowd...

I crossed bhaiya se mila...

Finally climbed bus... Thank God my AC was working properly...

Bus started and then took the U-turn... Oh My God... Why did I crossed?( I was feeling like fool :((

Finally reached office in 40 mins, long journey but then I closed eyes and took short nap as subhe jaldi utha tha :)

Went to Office... Realized that I was the among the first people to reach there...

Went to Induction Program afterwards... Got knowledge about company...
Nice tutor, Good Skills and great orator too :)

Met R&D head, Nice Man :) I mean he is a personality :)

Went to Production plant, Met head there and many people, Enjoyed work :)

Took Lunch with COO Sir, R&D Head, Quality Head and Me :))

Went to office, aur fir vida leke kaal milunga kehke bahar nikala tab pata chala bus to Nikal gai... Ab kya? Was thinking aur utne me...

M2: Great. Anyways, here in Delhi there is undisciplined crowd (She pronounced correctly, not like me..Dilli )
Me: But, Its fun in Dillii, If you drive here you can drive anywhere in World :)

Aur fir baate baate baate cant write kyoki abhi neend bhi aa rahi.

Went to Metro station :) ( I enjoy it)
Was checking balance in card, Utne mein piche wala bola NIL hai... Mujhe laga hoga..
Went in line refilled it and found arey yaar usme to bohot balance tha, ghussa aa gaya, fir laga, usne bhi galti se dekha hoga, this is greatness of Dilli, U forget the tension aur ghussa bhi chale jata hai :)

Went to my station, Did some shopping aur fir Mamm ka phone kal subhe jaldi aa sakte ho?
Me: Ok, sure.. kitne baje?
Mamm: 6.45 am :)))
Me: Done, Pakka

Now off to bed as I have to reach early tomorrow :)

Day 1: Welcome to Dilli :)

04/06/12:

Today it was the First day at the City if Hearts : Dilliii...

Reached early in morning and got the Auto towards my Room.
Auto wala was very humble, It took us around 10 mins to search my Room, But he politely helped me (Even dint asked any tip :) )

Then as I came to building, mistakenly at 5am knocked wrong door, I was expecting ki saala galli de dega yaa zhagda karega par yaar bande ne mujhe subhe madad ki apna room dhundhne ke liye...

Fir Naye Dost, Naye Log aur dillli ke Parathe :)

In the evening went to Metro Station in sharing auto which just charged me 5bucks (Its great in Dilli people, take care of global warming and pollution and opt for sharing auto's). Metro station pe coin liya aur fir metro .... Zoooommmmm...

Unlike Mumbai Local, it was AC and uncrowdy even at 7pm (Strange)

Dropped down at station and was trying to get out by just keeping coin, fir piche wale ne bola U have to drop coin in it :)))

Came out of station went to Good Mall, shopped, ate at Bikano Food Court, Nice food but, I was shocked when I asked them to give me water, they said we only have packed drinking water,which was pathetic, if some customer is going to it, then they expect the water atleast (Even McD gives free water, then How can they say no?)

Fir se wohi Metro se journey then Sharing auto then to room :))))

Now sleeping as I have to wake early tomorrow..

It proves the old needs to transform itself to be relevant or be endangered.
As the richest sports league in the world, it commands deserving attention to adapt and learn. Here are 10 lessons for businesses to aim for success
1.    Never say Never before: Most business commit the cardinal sin of stating nobody has done it before us or focusing too much on the non-existent but IPL is based on the most popular sports of the country, BCCI always had regional cricket played. Everything was there before but @LalitKModi thought different and combined it with glamour, show business, bollywood, powerful business personality. Pretty much brought the ‘sexy back’ to cricket.

TIP: Your business should be relatable to the better side of your consumer, if you give them power there will keep coming back for more.
3.    Deliver: IPL was all about big and bold announcements and thrilling excitement but they did manage to deliver it to the mark and probably much more. IPL promoted itself as ‘Entertainment in Cricket’ not ‘Cricket in Entertainment’ and that’s what precisely its all about. Over the five years IPL has more or less delivered the public bonanza and is evolving to absorb the ever-changing and more so challenging variables.
TIP: Carefully develop a bold brand phenomena and then deliver value, don’t shy away from going the extra mile. Value is the only this which is going the build the bridge between you and your clientele for recurring business.
4.    Everybody is accessible: IPL has brought the mightiest of the lot together and anybody can tell that franchisees are not just in for the profit. Absolutely not,  IPL has become the ultimate brand promotion property. If you got it you flaunt it, money will automatically follow where energy flows.
Tip: If your product becomes the center of gravity for acquiring customers then let the business model evolve, don’t be rigid. Create synergy driven properties to bring value to all stakeholders and mostly to your end customer.
6.    The Show must go on: IPL didn’t act like a wet cat when they got the obnoxious no for organizing matches in India for one of its season. It immediately went in to a overdrive and  ultimately maneuvered  it in its favour. IPL fans wanted a cricket feast and that’s what they got and in the process the IPL brand got a stronger foothold in its customers emotions. The travel industry got a huge supplemental benefit and so did other allied ones.
TIP: When encountered with sudden or unexpected challenges think different, think like IPL and look it straight in the eyes to turn it around in your favour. Be open to meet additional opportunities and relationships.
7.     PR, PR , PR, PR & some more PR: IPL is one of the most PR savvy brand in India, it manages to remain in the news due to its high-profile franchisees almost all the time and  it’s not aggressive PR like the one nearing the event, its soft PR embedded in the story pressing itself in the psyche of its reader. IPL has mastered the art of effortless PR and that has given them an outrageous advantage. IPL understands the significance of driving content instead of just developing content.
TIP: PR is always more valuable than paid advertising in mobilizing follower-ship and business development. Although, the days of classic Press Release are dead but PR today is about being news worthy and churning out useful content on consistent basis. Investing and Developing a culture of consistent value driver PR places you up front irrespective of your size.
Compared to global leagues IPL is still young and has a long way to go but nobody can ignore its impact and business model.
The extra Dough: Stuff you can do now to get on the IPL bandwagon:
1. Run time bound category specific campaigns  relevant to your business. Indian Product league, India prospect league, Indian Chips League, Indian Make League. You catch my drift make it bold, make it attractive and put it up on your website, your email list etc.
2. Do a product launch nearing the end date of IPL and start the teasers right now
3. Run content relating to IPL on Social Media, Press, your website.
4. Organize IPL lunches, Cocktails, Dinners for your deserving clientele or potential one. Nobody can say no to cricket, food and drinks in India and it will give you an opportunity to open up and develop a cool relationship.
5. Run SEO Campaign: I searched a couple of IPL terms on google but got nothing for listing in terms of business. Why not run a time restricted SEO campaign this is especially crucial for restaurants, take away concept, sporting goods, Sports coaching and consumer goods. Get a feeling of the people who goggle IPL and accordingly show yourself to them.
6. Get some interviews with your industry peers and post it as IPL bonus on your site and other media.
7. Write a post like this if you are an individual and make it relevant to your industry.
8. Come out with a customer driven campaign featuring customers which can be used as testimonials.
